An Introduction to Jazz for Hip Tots

With many of our staff, children and youth displaced following Hurricane Katrina, this year UMT departed from our usual programming to offer a music education program especially for young children, many of whom are struggling to express their feelings and cope with losses following the hurricane.

Children listen to select recordings and have opportunities to interact with a live band as they gain a greater understanding of the diversity of jazz music and what makes it special.

An original, 6-piece New Orleans traditional band performs in different styles, while young people will be encouraged to dance, sing along, and play instruments to the beat.
