Uptown Music Theatre presents Althea Gibson: An American Champion

 
Last Month, 24 students from New Orleans’ Lusher Charter School performed Delfeayo’s original jazzy musical about tennis champion Althea Gibson.

The 30-minute work chronicles Gibson’s career from learning paddle tennis on the streets of Harlem to reigning victoriously at the prestigious Wimbledon Championships in the 1950s. Facing the challenges of American race relations, Gibson developed an innovative and aggressive style of play that would serve as a model for the modern tennis game in the 1980s.
